Seventh Day Initiative

H-IPL seeks to work with Hoosier faith communities to create “an ever-widening circle of care for Creation”. To this end, H-IPL will form a covenant with 100 congregations from twenty faith traditions to help them model stewardship of the Earth. We believe that the leadership of these faith communities will inspire and support others to follow their example.
The Seventh Day Covenant
The congregation pledges to seek to:
- Cut its faith building’s energy use by a seventh and
- Inspire and equip a third of its members to reduce their household energy use by a seventh.
H-IPL pledges to support the congregation to:
- Form and inspire a congregational Creation Care Team through programs like the Creation Care Leadership Workshops for teams from seven to ten local congregations or Cut Your CO2sts Workshops for a group from a single congregation,
- Reduce its building’s energy use with guidance from the H-IPL congregational checklist and manuals,
- Inspire members of the congregation to action through a congregational event focused on a film and follow-on discussion,
- Engage members through a pledge and a simple online household survey,
- Equip members to reduce their energy use through the Task of the Month program,
- Sustain and equip its creation care leaders through clergy and lay listservs and a virtual library of faith and science resources, and
- Demonstrate success through a follow-up online survey.
